Whistle Bend-Porter Creek Connector Feasibility Study Meeting

Community Connector

A feasibility study and concept design for a connection between Porter Creek and Whistle Bend.

Following membership engagement and endorsement, Porter Creek Community Association received dollars through Government of Yukon's Community Development Fund to conduct a feasibility study and conceptual design for the construction of a steel stairway between Porter Creek and Whistle Bend subdivisions.

Following broader community engagement, the scope of the project became a broader discussion around connectivity in general. The study ended up including plans for alternative connectors, including creating new trails and/or enhancing existing trails. The third-party conducting the work also explored additional trailhead locations throughout the greenbelt space.

Porter Creek Community Association intends to share these findings with the City of Whitehorse and recommends further community engagement. The final report is available to membership.

2020-21 Fire Smart Proposed Treatment

2021-22 FireSmart

This year's FireSmart treatment area is located south of Ponderosa close to the snow dump.

FireSmart treatment is a method of reducing available forest fuels that provides protection in the event of wildfire. The area treated in the 2021-22 year is a continuation of work completed in a similar area over the past couple of years.

Porter Creek Community Association makes a decision on the area treated annually based on the recommendation of the Yukon Wildland Fire Management branch of the Government of Yukon and community engagement.

Community groups receive a small percentage of the overall funding agreement for engaging with the community and for managing the contractor completing the treatment. The revenue generated is invested back into our community.

2019-21 Fire Smart Proposed Treatment

Aspen Tree Planting

The natural FireSmart treatment was completed immediately behind the homes on Almond Place and Spruce Street, parallel to Mountain View Drive.

In June 2019, Yukon Wildland Fire Management completed the planting of 500 aspen saplings in the area parallel to Mountain View Drive (highlighted in green in the 2019-20 FireSmart map above). Aspen trees provide a natural fire break in the event of wildland fire. This treatment was in addition to the traditional Fire Smart method completed in 2017-18 in the same area.

We would like to extend our most sincere 'thanks' to Porter Creek South MLA, Hon. Ranj Pillai, Community Services Minister, John Streicker, and the absolutely amazing staff at the department for all of their efforts in helping us with this project!
